Founded in 2006, the group Fourth Floor is based on a non-standard set of instruments, whose core is a synthesis of the sound of vibraphone and marimba. These instruments are played by Dominik Rosłon and Jan Freicher, who have been collaborating for many years. Their telepathic understanding on stage makes the intermingling sounds of the two instruments seem a musical utterance of one soloist. The rhythm section of the group consists of bass guitarist Marcin Grabowski and drummer Radek Szarek. All the four musicians are fully trained (e.g. at the elite Jazz and Pop Music Department of the Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland) and have a considerable experience on the music market.
An innovative approach to music, brilliant arrangements, original compositions as well as extraordinarily high level of artistry – virtuosity combined with huge ease of performance – all this goes into the making of the success of the group Fourth Floor.
The original musical concept of the group resulted in the first prize on an arranging competition in Fürth (Germany) two months before the first public appearances.
The concert activity instantly met with approval of critics and public alike.
In 2007, the musicians won two first prizes on both Summer Jazz Festival in Germany and on the oldest one in Poland, the legendary Jazz on the Odra River. Moreover, the Polish audience awarded them with the prestigious prize “Key to Career 2007”. The group also appeared on Jazz Forum Festival, Jazzwelten Dresden, Krokus Jazz Festival, Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa, Jesień Jazzowa Gorzów Jazz Celebrations and Jazztage Görlitz festivals, and its concert appearances took place on events hosting such stars as Kenny Garret, Nils Petter Molvaer, Jean-Luc Ponty or Bill Evans.
Everybody exposed to the creative output of the group is unanimous in that it is a new, fascinating phenomenon. Nobody would have thought that such an unusual set of instruments can sound so great.
The music presented by Fourth Floor is their own material full of freshness, youthful vitality and musical optimism. Each time, the performances of the group cause great enthusiasm in a very wide circle of listeners. Despite the fact that one may find influences of Latin, pop or contemporary dance music in its creative activity, one cannot pigeon-hole the stylistics of Fourth Floor. Hence despite important jazz trophies won, the group wins the hearts of throngs of people that do not keep in touch with jazz every day.
The author of the music is Jan Freicher – distinguished artist of the young generation already appreciated on the music market, formed under the direction of such celebrities as Bernard Maseli, Andrzej Zubek or the American composer Bill Molenhof. Apart from jazz music, he has numerous symphonic and choral works as well as pop songs to his account. He often emphasises that, regardless of stylistics, music must be understandable and digestible for people, as it is addressed to them. The creativity of Jan Freicher each time strikes the audience with an unusual charge of positive energy. The sound of the group Fourth Floor is the result of his many years' reflections on arranging music.
